Oma Rhee

Oma Rhee

1999, 20 minute short doc, 16mm, Color

Growing up, my sisters and I never talked about our mother.  Her death was a secret weighing on our family, creating a heavy silence in our home.  I wanted to lift that silence.  For the first time, I asked my sisters to talk about Mom.  This was the first documentary I made in college.  I wanted to open the door to honest conversation with these beautiful women, so we could acknowledge what happened.

This film is a portrait of a family's struggle with unexpressed emotion and the healing that comes with release.

It screened at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C., film festivals, and on PBS.  It also screened at a punk rock show in Arkansas.  I love showing my work in all those places.
